Description
This 29.9 km ornithological route through the Sierra de Montánchez and Tamuja region connects three Ornithological Points of Interest (PIO): PIO 02 Cordel de Montánchez, PIO 05 Villasviejas del Tamuja, and PIO 03 Camino de La Cumbre. The itinerary crosses the Special Protection Areas for Birds (ZEPA) Llanos de Trujillo and Riberos del Almonte, featuring habitats such as dehesas, crops, grasslands, Mediterranean forests, rivers, and ponds. At PIO 02, steppe birds such as the great bustard, the little bustard, and large raptors are prominent; at PIO 05, species associated with the dehesa and river environments, such as the Egyptian vulture, the black stork, and the Iberian azure-winged magpie can be observed; and at PIO 03, in addition to steppe birds, there are ducks and waders. The route also includes the Vettonian fort of Villasviejas del Tamuja, one of the seven wonders of the region. All three PIOs are accessible, have parking, and offer short walking tours.
